About EuroTrip 2000

Why We're Going

As many readers know, Rob has been working with Sisyphean diligence on FrontPage since the beginning of 1995. All that time, he's worked until he's almost bleeding from his ears, cranked out five and a half product releases, and somehow managed to squeeze in a cross-country move, a home purchase, and a marriage. While the work hours have calmed down somewhat since the days when Lisa would occasionally go two weeks without seeing him awake, he's still pulling the kind of time that people unionize over. And he's tired. Really, really, really tired. So tired that he once remarked that a long prison sentence actually sounded very relaxing. So, instead of locking him up, Lisa is hauling his ass to Europe for the longest period of leisure he's had since grade school.

Lisa works freelance out of our home, which isn't exactly leisure, but it's positively soap-operas-and-bon-bons in comparison. Lisa is neither tired, nor particularly in need of relaxation.  She does, however, expect this situation to radically change as soon as we have kids. So, besides getting Rob rested up, we're also taking this trip to have something to console ourselves with while we're walking colicky babies at 3 AM, wiping unspeakable substances off the walls, and otherwise kissing our yuppified arugula-salad-eating lives goodbye. "At least," we'll tell each other as we sponge baby vomit off our clothes while frosting bake-sale cupcakes, "we got to go to Europe that time."

Prior European Experience

Lisa spent a horrible winter semester in London as a broke student, and during that time she spent a few days in Paris and in Amsterdam. Mostly what she remembers is not being able to afford prepared food. She expects that this trip will be…somewhat different. Rob's spent much more time there. He spent one year in London as a not-quite-so-broke student and one as a not-at-all broke engineer, did the backpacking thing, visited Italy (his ancestral home) several times, spent six weeks in Oslo for work and one in Amsterdam for play. Most recently, we honeymooned in Tuscany in 1998.

The Website

As we all know, there isn't any point in doing anything unless you can publicize it. Since we owe almost everything about this trip (from wherewithal to planning) to the World Wide Web, we could find no more fitting tribute than a website. It will help keep Lisa writing and Rob taking photographs, and will, ideally, prevent us from terrorizing you with a post-trip slide presentation. No, this site will not be like the TV show Survivor. Our parents are reading this, for Chrissakes. What you will find is an extremely sanitized version of our adventures. As far as you will be able to tell, we will look terribly attractive at every moment, only say and do the most wonderful things, and never, ever have sex. Our arguments will be straight out of a Noel Coward play, our mishaps merely fodder for witty cocktail party repartee. There will be no despair, no ennui, no depression, no tears, no silent seething, no diarrhea. Our sole aim is to keep our friends and families up-to-date on our whereabouts and as teeth-grindingly envious as possible.

To this digital end, we are packing along one Sony Vaio z505fg, one Fuji Finepix 4700 digital camera, one Targus Connection Pack for Europe (myriad power and phone connectors), one Trager Cross Country Laptop bag, and two Palm Vs.  Needless to say, the EuroTrip website is powered by FrontPage.
