First Stop | |
| Rob: Ok, so it isn't really Europe
yet, but we thought that loyal readers would want to know that we arrived
safely at our first planned stop and the launching point for EuroTrip 2000
- Essex, Massachusetts. It is the first test of our technology too, and so
far (if you are reading this), computer, camera, and connectivity are
working. Score one for ITG.
We'll keep it short since you're probably hungry for exotic tales of far away lands and all that we have to offer is Massachusetts. The quick weather summary - cold, overcast with some showers. Basically, exactly how we left it in Seattle, without the sun breaks. Still, we're not complaining. Conomo Point is just outside of downtown Essex, home to tourist landmark Woodman's seafood. The point is at the mouth of the Essex river facing Crane's beach. A few years ago they filmed that witch movie with Winona Ryder on Hogg's Island which is just off the point. "The Crucible," that's the one - if you saw the movie and remember the sweeping views from the opening, that's what we're looking at. My parents have a house here for the Summers, it is a great spot for sailing, sea kayaking, and just hanging out watching the egrets and cormorants. Lisa: Speaking of movies, "The Perfect Storm" was filmed in Gloucester, one town over. I want to go see The Crow's Nest--the bar where all the fishermen go to blow all their pay onshore--but Rob is less enthusiastic. We have so much family to see, that a trip to Gloucester's seamier side (famous or no) is probably fairly low on our priority list. We did get to go to Rob's cousin Michael's son's christening luncheon at Angelo's in East Boston. The scene was straight out of "The Sopranos"--right down to the stenciled grapevines on the walls and about fifteen people screaming "Where's Ralphie?" Rob: Of course, she knew that when she married into the family... Besides the christening in East Boston, we had a little excitement here in the morning. The point association had the first sail boat race of the season. It was a casual event, some kids and older people all racing in the same type of sailboat. I'm not much of a sailor so I took pictures, but my dad raced for his first time - came in last though. See the pictures here...
